Good afternoon, Mayor Wynn and Council Members. We
May 11, 2009 Meeting of the Fluoride Free Austin group
First meeting of Fluoride Free Austin was attended by 43 people at
Casa de Luz, which provided a free place to meet in the Cielo room and
equipment to show a DVD. Thanks to Eduardo Longoria of Casa de Luz for
the excellent meeting room!
A. Introduction by Jinji Willingham
Jingi Willingham made brief initial comments about her growing
concerns regarding water fluoridation as a concerned mother and had to
drastically change her belief that fluoride was ok in public drinking
water. Jinji’s phone number is 350-8505 and email:

shipping. Watch a 2 minute trailer at the website.
About the DVD – Professional Perspectives on Water Fluoridation. Are
you looking for a tool to educate your city councilors, friends, and
community about the problems with water fluoridation? Are you looking
for a credible, science-based, yet easy-to-understand summary of the
issue? If so, than look no further, as Professional Perspectives on
Water Fluoridation was designed for that very purpose.
Featuring a Nobel Laureate in Medicine, three scientists from the
National Research Council’s landmark review on fluoride, as well as
dentists, medical doctors, and leading researchers in the field, this
professionally-produced 28-minute DVD presents a powerful indictment
of the fluoridation program.
The DVD also includes four special features including Dr. Bill
Osmunson’s acclaimed statement on fluoride. A great resource for
anyone involved in the issue.
C. Linda Greene spoke about reading the book The Fluoride Deception
and on talking to Austin City Council
Linda described how she had recently read the book The Fluoride
Deception by Christopher Bryson with a foreword by Dr. Theo Colborn,
Seven Stories Press, April 2006. As a result, Linda started speaking
at Austin City Council on Thursdays during Citizens Communication on
March 12, 2009. She does not believe that the Austin City Council
members have listened to her concerns that fluoride is harmful.
More on the new paperback edition of The Fluoride Deception can be
read at: http://www.fluoridealert.org/fluoride-deception.htm. The
paperback version is offered at Amazon.com for $7.58.
See: Video Interview (29 minutes) with author Christopher Bryson at:
http://www.fluoridealert.org/fluoride-deception.htm. Bryson is an
award-winning journalist and former producer at the BBC, discusses the
findings of his new book The Fluoride Deception.
Reviews (16) of The Fluoride Deception at:
“Christopher Bryson is an excellent narrator, and he reports on recent
research previously not known to me… It is my sincere hope that his
book will receive the attention it deserves and that its implications
will be seriously considered.” – DR. ARVID CARLSSON, 2000 Nobel Prize
Laureate for Medicine
Excerpt from the FOREWORD – By DR. THEO COLBORN, co-author of Our
Stolen Future: Are We Threatening Our Fertility, Intelligence, and
Survival? A Scientific Discovery Story (1996)
“Bryson writes with the skill of a top-selling novelist, but it was
not his convincing storytelling that made me finish the book. It was
the haunting message that possibly here again was another therapeutic
agent, fluoride, that had not been thoroughly studied before it was
foisted on the public as a panacea to protect or improve health.
Bryson reveals that the safety of fluoride became a firmly established
paradigm based on incomplete knowledge. The correct questions were
never asked (or never answered when they were asked), thus giving
birth to false or bottomless assumptions that fluoride was therapeutic
and safe. Certainly, the evidence Bryson has unearthed in this book
begs for immediate attention by those responsible for public health…
While reading the book, I kept thinking back to 1950, three years
after I got my BS degree in Pharmacy and the year I gave birth to my
first child. Fluoride came on the market packaged in pediatric vitamin
drops for infants. Mothers left the hospital with their new babies in
their arms and prescriptions in their hands from their dismissing
physicians for these fluoride-laced drops. About that time communities
around the country began to add fluoride to their drinking water. The
promised benefits of fluoride were so positive that my dentist friends
began to wish that they had chosen dermatology instead of dentistry.
At that same time pregnant women were being given a pharmaceutical,
diethylstilbestrol (DES), to prevent miscarriages, as well as DES-
laced prescription vitamins especially designed for pregnant women to
produce big, fat, healthy babies. I felt good when I dispensed the
fluoride and DES prescriptions – they were products designed to
prevent health problems rather than treat them. Now I can only wonder
how many children were harmed because I and others like me took the
word of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the USPHS, and the
major pharmaceutical companies producing these products. We were
caught up in the spin. We were blind to the corporate hubris and were
swept along with the blissful enthusiasm that accompanies every new
advance in modern technology and medicine…
Certainly the evidence Bryson presents in this book should cause those
charged with protecting public health to demand answers about the
developmental, reproductive, and functional role of fluorine in all
CHRISTOPHER BRYSON is an award winning investigative reporter and a
television producer. He covered Guatemalan Army human rights abuses
from Central America in the late 1980’s for the BBC World Service,
National Public Radio and The Atlanta Constitution. In 1989 he was
part of an investigative team that won a George Polk Award and Sidney
Hillman Prize with Jonathan Kwitny at Public Television’s The Kwitny
Report. In 1999 he won a Project Censored award with medical writer
Excerpt from Interview at http://www.fluoridealert.org/fluoride-deception.htm:
1. What prompted you to write “The Fluoride Deception”?
I’m a reporter. I don’t know how many modern stories have the same
epic reach of history and rich cast of characters as you will find in
“The Fluoride Deception.”
I stumbled on the story in 1993. I was working in New York as a BBC
radio producer and was asked to find “an American angle” on water
fluoridation. Ralph Nader put me in touch with a couple of government
scientists (William Hirzy at the EPA and Robert Carton at the U.S.
Army) who opposed water fluoridation, and explained how the science
underpinning the nation’s fluoride safety standards was fraudulent…
D. Rae Nadler-Olenick talked about speaking to Austin City Council 12 times
since last fall on the hazards of fluoridation since last fall and a
new Fluoride chemical contract for Austin to spend more money to buy
Rae Nadler-Olenick has a great blog about all of her talks to the Austin City
Council since last fall at: http://blog.fluoridefreeaustin.com/. Rae
has spoken to the Austin City Council 12 times since fall.
Rae elaborated on the public drinking water fluoridation fraud that
began in the 1940s at the highest echelons of the U.S. govn’t. Rae
emphasized the need for education about the dangers of fluoride,
because most people are unaware of the problems posed by public
drinking water fluoridation.
She mentioned that 2,000 Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
scientists had signed a petition to end public drinking water
fluoridation as part of the EPA’s Union of scientists among its 12,000
Rae asked several questions of the group:
a. Do you trust politicians when they say that public drinking water
fluoridation is safe? The group consensus was “No.” Many people trust
politicians to tell the truth even when they don’t.
b. Do you trust medical doctors if they say that public drinking water
fluoridation is safe? The group consensus was “No.” Yet the public
often trusts medical doctors to tell the truth.
c. Do you trust dentists if they say that public drinking water
fluoridation is safe? The group consensus was “No.”
Rae asked: How are you going to face patients, as a dentist, after
telling them for 10, 20 or 30 years that fluoridation is good for
Brief history of fluoride was presented by Rae. Fluorine itself is a
toxic substance. Calcium fluoride (CaF) was first used in the smelting
of iron into steel and aluminum and a different fluoride chemical
uranium hexafluoride, was used in the production of uranium in the
1940s. The problem with fluoride began when workers got sick due to
their exposures to the CaF and fluoride emissions, and the workers
were organizing lawsuits against the companies. Since uranium
processing need fluorine as uranium hexafluoride involving the
Manhattan Project to develop the first Atomic bomb and the smelting
industry needed CaF for its factories, industry and the U.S.
government (Defense Department) met to discuss a solution. This was a
national security issue to deal with fluoride’s toxicity. The Defense
Dept. and industry decided they had to give fluoride a facelift by
turning it from a toxin into a panacea! Fluoridation of the public
drinking water was the result.
The community of Grand Rapids, Michigan was tested to determine if
public drinking water fluoridation would reduce cavities, and it was
compared in a public study to Muskegon, Michigan where no fluoride was
added to the water. The conclusion of the study suggested that it was
a success showing that public drinking water fluoridation reduced
cavities, but the raw data apparently did not support that conclusion.
Rae explained that on March 26, 2009 the Austin City Council members
voted 7-0 to agree to a new far more costly and longer contract to buy
the fluoride treatment chemical for the public drinking water
fluoridation program. But no one appeared to know that the COA was
considering a new contract, especially after Rae and Linda Greene had
been speaking to the City Council about the hazards of fluoridation.
Rae said she found it accidentally on the City’s website and called
the person’s whose named was associated with the contract.
E. Dr. Griffin Cole is an Austin dentist who is opposed to
fluoridation based on the scientific hazards and ethical concerns he
has as a dentist
Dr. Cole described how he had read the book The Fluoride Deception and
that he had been taught about none of it in dental school. He reviewed
one early finding about natural fluoride in water from Colorado
Springs where patients were being seen with spots on their teeth and
had no cavities. The spots were found to be fluorosis and were caused
by a fairly high level of natural fluorides in the drinking water.
Dr. Cole discussed how the steel and fertilizer industry had major
problems with the large volumes of toxic fluoride waste they had from
their processing operations. In the 1940s, ALCOA was another company
that was smelting huge amounts of aluminum using calcium fluoride in
its process and producing large volumes of toxic fluoride waste
Dr. Cole reviewed the early history involving key figures Edward
Bernays and Harold Hodge of the Manhattan Project. Harold Hodge, one
of fluoridation’s pioneers and a toxicology expert, whose
epidemiological research was influential in giving fluoridation the
green light, himself stated that there should be at least a 100-fold
margin in the dietary use of a potentially toxic agent. Hodge was the
leading scientist who created the data showing fluoride’s harmlessness
in the doses they planned to administer to the nation’s water
The Manhattan Project was tied to the toxic fluoride waste problem
because uranium processing to make the first U.S. Atomic bomb required
uranium hexafluoride (“Hex”) and the production of toxic fluoride
waste in large volumes. In a secret Manhattan Project memo dated
March 1, 1946, Harold Hodge, who was the Manhattan Project’s chief
toxicologist for fluorine studies, wrote to the Manhattan Project’s
medical division chief, Colonel Stafford Warren. Hodge expressed his
concern regarding the toxicity of fluorine and the New Jersey
incident. Hodge outlined four major areas of concern. See more
details on Harold Hodge’s key role at: http://ahealedplanet.net/fluoride.htm
Another person involved was none other than Edward Bernays, the
“father of public relations” and one of the greatest propagandists of
all time, designed Oscar Ewing’s public relations campaign for
fluoridation. Bernays was recruited for the U.S. public drinking water
fluoridation program. Bernays also designed the campaign by the
American Tobacco Company to addict American women to tobacco, and
Joseph Goebbels adopted Bernays’ work in his Nazi propaganda campaigns
against the Jews.
Oscar Ewing was once the top ALCOA attorney. In 1947, ALCOA’s lead
counsel, Oscar Ewing, was named to head the Federal Security Agency
(FSA), which later became the U.S. Health, Education and Welfare
Department (today it is called the Department of Health and Human
Services, or HHS). Ewing went on the ALCOA payroll in 1944 at the
astounding salary of $750,000 per year. The FSA oversaw the PHS, and
the same year Ewing began at the FSA, he initiated a national
fluoridation project through the PHS, helping to build a bandwagon for
fluoridation in the absence of any credible scientific data. At that
time, there were two cities undergoing water-supply fluoridation
tests: Grand Rapids, Michigan and Newburgh, New York. The tests were
to run for ten to fifteen years to collect data. Ewing began
campaigning for a national fluoridation program when those tests were
only two years old, and no significant data was available or even
By 1950, 89 cities were fluoridated, despite no credible evidence ever
submitted demonstrating that it reduced tooth decay, or doing anything
other than causing disease, misery and death.
By the 1950s, the National Institute of Dental Research (NIDR) became
a corrupt organization that produced “research” that fluoride
polluters used to protect themselves from liability lawsuits.
Dr. Cole mentioned the work of Dr. Phyllis Mullenix, who conducted
ground breaking research at Harvard on the toxicity of sodium fluoride
and was fired after she published her research in a peer-reviewed
journal. See more on Dr. Mullenix and an at:
with the small excerpt below.
DR. PHYLLIS J. MULLENIX, Ph.D. is a pharmacologist and toxicologist by
training… In the 1980s, Dr. Mullenix was Head of the Toxicology
Department at the Forsyth Dental Center, a world renowned dental
research institution affiliated with the Harvard Medical School. She
was invited to start Forsyth’s Toxicology Department because of her
expertise in neurotoxicology. She is presently a Research Associate in
Psychiatry at the Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Boston. Dr.
Mullenix’s academic appointments, professional positions held,
teaching experience, awards, honors and many published scientific
research articles to her name are numerous.
The first test Dr. Mullenix was asked to perform at the Forsyth Dental
Center was a test related to neurotoxicity of fluoride. The person who
asked her to perform this test was Dr. Harold C. Hodge, one of the
founders of the Society of Toxicology. Since that time, Dr. Mullenix
has conducted additional research related to fluoride including one
study which is about to be published. She is considered one of the
foremost experts on the neurotoxicity of fluoride compounds..
Dr. Mullenix answers the question 3) HOW TO AVOID OR RESTRICT FLUORIDE
INTAKE at: http://www.fluoridealert.org/pmullenix.htm
3) There are ways to restrict fluoride exposure:
a) drink distilled water or bottled water with known low fluoride
content (i.e., Evian)
b) avoid drinking processed beverages made with fluoridated water-
c) avoid drinking tea
d) avoid foods sprayed with cryolite- used often on potatoes (outer
peel may have as much as 20 ppm fluoride)
e) avoid foods that labs have confirmed as being high in fluoride-
some cereals (fruit loops, wheaties), vegetables grown next to
industries- spinach, celery
f) whenever possible, switch from fluorinated to nonfluorinated
medications. Besides steroids, antibiotics, anesthetics
(methoxyflurane) and antidepressants (prosac and paxil) contain
fluorine in chemical structure. When metabolized, they may contribute
to fluoride levels in blood.
g) get plenty of calcium in diet (magnesium can help some too).
F. Jim Holland of Eco-Wise on Filters to remove Fluoride from
Austin’s Drinking Water
Jim Holland spoke briefly from Eco-Wise that no filter will remove
100% of the fluoride chemical in Austin’s drinking water. Reverse
osmosis or RO filters get about 92%. Alumina filters do a little
better than 92%, but has to be replaced at some point and you don’t
know when the filter is loaded up with fluoride such that it was not
accept any more, basically passing it through the filter.

G Linda Greene on Failure to Communicate at the City of Austin
Linda mentioned giving one copy of the new book The Fluoride Deception
to Austin City Council members when she first spoke on March 12,
2009. Linda mentioned providing the book to Council members Randi
Shade and Michael Martinez. She said that Austin City Council members
and aides were invited to the meeting tonight but none of them showed
Linda emphasized that it was disgusting that the Austin City Council
had voted 7-0 on March 26, 2009 to extend the fluoridation treatment
chemical contract at a much higher cost and over a longer period
meaning a much higher cost to Austin taxpayers and City water users.
Despite Linda and Rae Olenick speaking several times at the Citizens
Communications to the Austin City Council, their efforts had done
nothing to educate them on the hazards of fluoridation.
Linda talked about a City of Austin official named Jane Burazer with
the Water Utility Dept. who was aware that the fluoride treatment
chemical used by the City of Austin for public drinking water
fluoridation came from the scrubber towers of the phosphate fertilizer
industry. There was a concern expressed about the actual purity of the
fluoride treatment chemical and that it may contain numerous toxic
Linda brought up the 1972 Austin referendum when the fluoridation
program was passed by voters as the legal authority for public
drinking water fluoridation.
H. Miscellaneous Community Members Spoke at the End of the Meeting
Bill Swail, RPh who is the owner of the People’s Pharmacy, Inc. on
4018 N. Lamar in Austin, spoke briefly on supporting the efforts to
stop fluoridation in Austin. Bill indicated that more local radio
stations and programs were going to be carrying information about the
People’s Pharmacy, and that this might offer another avenue for
spreading information on the dangers of fluoridation.
Jingi Willingham shared an email sent to her from Brandi Clark with
the Austin Eco-Network that a big cultural shift was needed to educate
the Austin general public and move away from public drinking water
fluoridation. Jingi plans to set up a google group for members of the
Fluoride Free Austin effort to communicate, network and share
Linda Greene described her Letter-to-the-Editor to the Austin
Chronicle that was recently published and her frustrations in getting
it published. She read part of the LTE.
Various speakers mentioned organizing a local campaign to start
writing Letters-to-the-Editor, networking to share information with
numerous non-profit organizations, environmental groups, food groups,
E-groups, screening of the new 2009 film on DVD shown at the beginning-
Professional Perspectives on Water Fluoridation produced by the
Fluoride Action Network associated with Dr. Paul Connett who speaks on
the film, and other activities we could do to spread the message.
Neil Carman of the Sierra Club stated that the group had adopted a
national policy position against fluoridation about ten years ago
indicating there were concerns within the environmental community.
John Bush is a local community and political organizer and spoke about
running PSA’s to educate the public. John suggested it might require a
1-2 year campaign.
Notes compiled by Neil Carman, Ph.D., Sierra Club.
Attorney Brent Foster, state conservation chairman of the Oregon Sierra Club, once believed in water fluoridation. He has since changed his mind. See why here:
